Fui Meng Liew, Chief of Digital Center of Excellence at UNICEF, emphasised safeguarding children’s data rights through a comprehensive digital resilience framework. UNICEF’s work also involves developing digital public goods, with a focus on accessibility for children with disabilities and securing data privacy.

Dino Cataldo Dell’Accio from the UN Pension Fund presented a blockchain-powered proof-of-life system that uses biometrics and AI in support of e-Government for the aging population. This system ensures beneficiaries’ security and privacy while streamlining verification processes. Similarly, Sameer Chauhan of UNICC showcased digital solutions like AI chatbots and cybersecurity initiatives supporting UN agencies.

The session’s collaborative tone extended into discussions of the UN Digital ID project, which links multiple UN agencies. Audience members raised questions on accessibility, with Nancy Marango and Sary Qasim suggesting broader use of these solutions to support underrepresented communities globally.

Efforts across UN organisations reflect a shared commitment to ethical technology use and digital inclusion. The panellists urged collaboration and transparency as key to addressing challenges such as data protection and equitable access while maintaining focus on innovation.

Alibaba’s QwQ-32B AI model challenges OpenAI’s dominance

Alibaba has unveiled QwQ-32B-Preview, a new reasoning AI model designed to rival OpenAI’s o1 series. With 32.5 billion parameters and support for prompts up to 32,000 words, the model surpasses competitors in specific benchmarks, including logic puzzles and maths tests. Available for download under a permissive Apache 2.0 licence, it introduces robust reasoning capabilities but also exhibits limitations like language switching and occasional lapses in common sense.

The model incorporates test-time compute, enabling more thorough problem-solving by planning its steps before providing answers. However, such reasoning processes may result in slower responses. Like other AI models made by companies in China, QwQ-32B complies with local regulatory requirements, including constraints on politically sensitive topics, reflecting national ideological alignment.

Reasoning models like QwQ-32B mark a shift in AI development as traditional scaling laws show diminishing returns. Major firms, including Google, are exploring similar approaches, highlighting the race to innovate AI capabilities globally.

OLMo 2 models rival Meta’s best in performance

Ai2, a nonprofit AI research group, has introduced OLMo 2, a groundbreaking series of open-source language models designed for transparency and reproducibility. The models, developed using open-access data and tools, align with the Open Source Initiative’s standards for AI, setting them apart from many competitors.

The OLMo 2 series includes two versions: one with 7 billion parameters and another with 13 billion, making them powerful tools for tasks like summarising documents, answering questions, and generating code. Trained on a dataset of 5 trillion tokens sourced from websites, academic papers, and other vetted materials, the models perform competitively against Meta’s Llama 3.1.

While some critics voice concerns about potential misuse of open models, Ai2 argues their benefits outweigh the risks. By making the models freely available under an Apache 2.0 license, the organisation hopes to democratise AI development and promote ethical innovation.

Orange partners with OpenAI in Europe

Orange has entered a groundbreaking multi-year partnership with OpenAI, becoming the first European telecom company with direct access to pre-release versions of the company’s AI models. This collaboration will allow Orange to influence OpenAI’s development roadmap while ensuring secure hosting of AI infrastructure in Europe, according to the group’s AI chief, Steve Jarrett.

The partnership highlights the strategic importance of OpenAI’s widely used models, with over 50,000 Orange employees already integrating them into their work. Jarrett emphasised the financial and technological advantages of a direct relationship with OpenAI, boosting Orange’s position in the AI race.

In addition to the partnership, Orange is working with Meta and OpenAI to translate African languages like Wolof and Pular for customer support and broader non-commercial uses. The initiative aims to support governments, universities, and startups, expanding accessibility to underserved linguistic communities.

OpenAI, Meta join Orange in African translation project

AI partnership drives new opportunities for IMAX

The company has partnered with Dubai-based Camb.ai to use advanced speech and translation models for content localisation. With non-English content growing in popularity, including in English-speaking markets, the initiative aims to increase accessibility and reduce costs.

Camb.ai’s AI platform, DubStudio, supports over 140 languages, including lesser-known ones. Its specialised models, Boli and Mars, ensure accurate text-to-speech translations while preserving nuances like background audio and tone. The startup’s technology has been previously deployed for live events like the Australian Open and Eurovision Sport, showcasing its ability to handle high-pressure scenarios.

IMAX plans a phased rollout of the AI localisation, starting with widely spoken languages. Early tests of Camb.ai’s technology on IMAX’s original documentaries proved promising. The company expects the collaboration to reduce translation expenses while boosting the global appeal of its immersive experiences.

Camb.ai, founded by former Apple engineer Akshat Prakash and his father, recently raised $4 million and is securing additional funding to expand its team and operations. The startup avoids controversial data scraping methods, relying instead on ethically licensed datasets and input from early partners, positioning itself as a reliable choice for AI-driven content solutions.

Samsung and IIT Bombay forge partnership to drive innovation in AI and digital health

Samsung R&D Institute, Noida (SRI-Noida), and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have entered into a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to drive innovation in critical areas such as AI, digital health, and other emerging technologies. That collaboration highlights Samsung’s commitment to strengthening industry-academia ties for technological advancements.

The MoU establishes a framework for joint research projects, where IIT Bombay students and faculty will collaborate with Samsung engineers. This initiative enhances students’ industry readiness and facilitates the publication of joint research papers, promoting knowledge sharing that will accelerate technological progress and industry-aligned innovation.

Global south needs better AI access, says Xi

At the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned against allowing AI to become the exclusive domain of wealthy nations. Speaking at the global forum, Xi called for stronger international governance and cooperation to ensure equitable access to AI technologies.

Xi highlighted China’s commitment to supporting developing countries, unveiling a joint initiative with G20 partners to improve access to scientific and technological innovations in the Global South. The Chinese leader also cautioned against protectionist policies, such as tariffs on Chinese goods, which he argued undermine global trade and the transition to green economies.

The remarks come as Xi tours Latin America, echoing similar criticisms of economic barriers he raised at the APEC forum in Peru. His appeal for openness and collaboration underscores China’s broader efforts to position itself as a champion of equitable global development.
