The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) AI Lab, commissioned by the Global Digital Health Partnership, published a white paper titled AI for healthcare: Creating an international approach together. While acknowledging that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health systems has further accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic; the paper points out that the development and implementation of AI-driven technologies are outpacing policy-making and regulatory settings. The report provides a set of policy recommendations regarding how best to support and facilitate the application of AI technologies within health systems, through which they can provide a basis for the international health community to use to develop national and regional approaches to utilise AI-driven technologies for healthcare. The recommendations are categorised into four areas: leadership and oversight; the ecosystem of AI research and development; standards and regulatory processes; and engagement with stakeholders.
