Researchers at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have published a review of the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the future of global health. The review notes that the deployment of AI solutions in the health sector should be done with care and caution, to ensure that individuals and societies benefit equally. The researchers call on the global health community to develop guidelines for the human-centred, equitable, and ethical development and deployment of AI. Outlined recommendations include: (1) incorporate aspects of human-centred design into the AI development process; (2) ensure rapid and equitable access to representative datasets; (3) establish global systems for assessing and reporting efficacy and effectiveness of AI-driven interventions in global health; (4) develop a research agenda that includes implementation and system-related questions on the deployment of new AI-driven interventions; and (5) develop and implement global regulatory, economic, and ethical standards and guidelines.
