Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc.’s urban innovation organisation Sidewalk Labs announced they have cancelled their plans to develop a smart city in the Quayside area in Toronto, Canada. According to the announcement made by CEO Dan Doctoroff, the cancellation is due to ‘unprecedented economic uncertainty has set in around the world and in the Toronto real estate market’. This uncertainty, details the announcement, makes the project financially unsustainable. The cancellation takes place several months after an agreement was signed between Sidewalk Labs and Waterfront Toronto.
