Press release

Diplo is proud to announce that its new AI-powered reporting tool, DiploAI, has successfully assisted analysis and reporting of a UN Security Council (UN SC) debate.

The UN Security Council debate «Futureproofing trust for sustaining peace» (UN SC meeting 9315), held in New York on 3 May, served as a pilot launch for DiploAI, which provided just-in-time reporting from this six-hour event. Switzerland organised this debate on the occasion of the start of its UN SC presidency in May 2023. You can consult DiploAI-generated report from the UN SC debate

DiploAI can produce a wide-ranging and comprehensive set of reports and analyses based on live or recorded debates. This system is particularly beneficial for small and developing countries that do not have the human and institutional capacity to participate meaningfully in numerous UN processes and meetings.

Conceived in Geneva by the Swiss-Maltese organisation DiploFoundation, DiploAI is already a game changer in the fields of diplomacy and negotiations. Diplo’s reporting tool combines customised algorithms, specialised data sets for diplomacy, and the capabilities of a large language model (LLM).

DiploAI is the brainchild of Jovan Kurbalija, Executive Director of Diplo, who explained that ‘AI won’t replace diplomats.’ However, he believes that ‘the way diplomacy is conducted will be changed profoundly, as it has other professions. Artificial intelligence can provide diplomats with valuable insights on negotiations as they address the pressing problems of humanity.’

Context

DiploAI is the culmination of over two decades of rigorous research and application development in the realms of data, AI, and diplomatic communication by the Swiss-Maltese organisation DiploFoundation. By applying this digital innovation to ongoing high-level political debates, Diplo is contributing in a practical way to the critical debate on AI and its powerful impact on peace, diplomacy, and the multilateral system.
