Following a cabinet meeting focused on discussing a national digital strategy, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that the country would invest around €3 billion in research and development in artificial intelligence (AI) by 2025. As part of the AI plan, 12 regional centres will be established to form a national AI network, which will assist small and medium-sized companies in implementing AI. It is also expected that resources will be allocated to allow Germany to attract and keep innovative companies in the field of AI among other tasks. Moreover, positions are to be created for more than 100 professors specialised in AI, as a way to keep local talent in the country.  All in all, the plan is intended to contribute to making Germany a ‘leading international location for AI’, and it is part of a broader digital strategy, expected to be presented in early December.
