On 10 March 2020, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) hosted a roundtable on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on freedom of expression, organised by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of Media. Participants explored issues related to the role of algorithms and AI in shaping and arbitrating information online, and also discussed a draft paper on the AI implications on freedom of expression. The event marked the debut of a project on the impact of AI on freedom of expression, aimed to assist the Office of the Representative on Freedom of the Media in developing policy recommendations on ‘the most effective ways to safeguard freedom of expression and media pluralism, when deploying advanced machine-learning technologies such as AI’.
