The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law is among the first law schools to adopt a policy allowing students to use generative artificial intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT. Namely, the policy will enable students to use generative AI only for research and proofreading. If the students are found to be using generative AI, such as ChatGPT, for exams or for composing submitted assignments, they will be in violation of the school’s honor code. The growing concern about using ChatGPT and other large language models (LLM) for exam cheating has led to adopting this policy to find a balance that would allow using such models but only for specific purposes.
