The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has released its Human Development Report 2020 where it tackles the role of digital technology and how the digital age can help human development. The report particularly highlights that special attention should be paid towards fair and sustainable value chains for technology components, while at the same time recognizing the huge technical and knowledge gaps. While acknowledging the challenges posed by digital technologies, the Report underscores that digital transformation (e.g. mobile payments, Internet access and remote work) can help directly ease planetary pressures and advance human development as has been illustrated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
