The US Air Force has released its Artificial Intelligence Strategy, to serve as a framework for aligning Air Force’s efforts with the broader AI strategy of the Department of Defense. The document outlines five focus areas. To start with, the Air Force intends to ‘drive down technological barriers to entry’, by building a commercially relevant delivery model for AI solutions, and partnering with technology providers. Recognising and treating data as a strategic asset is another priority: the Air Force will, among other activities, set policy and standards for training-quality data to feed AI algorithms. Democratising access to AI solutions is also envisioned, though developing a diverse set of algorithms at risk-appropriate speed and scale. The other two areas underlined in the strategy focus on recruiting, developing, upskilling, and cultivating the Air Force’s workforce, and increasing transparency and cooperation with international, government, industry, and academic partners.
